English Language Training

As you begin your journey to the United States, you may experience a difference in language.  Many students from time to time need additional training to assist them with writing and speaking in the English language.  Although there are many similarities between the U.S. classroom and the classroom in your country, the U.S. classroom is influenced by the country’s historical roots, cultural values and prominent figures throughout the country’s history.

As part of the admissions requirements, students must submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if your native language is not English.  Regular University admission requires a minimum TOEFL score of 173 on the computerized exam or 61 on the Internet-based exam, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0.

The English Language Training program at Mountain State University offers intensive English study to students whose native language is not English and who do not meet the language testing requirement for University admission.

Students who successfully complete the Mountain State University ELT program and earn a qualifying TOEFL score (173 on the computerized exam or 61 on the Internet-based exam) are eligible for University admission and 5 hours of elective credit upon the completion of one academic term (at least 12 credit hours).  Those who met this requirement before January 2000 must apply through the prior learning assessment program to receive elective credit.

The University’s English Language Training program focuses on developing social, educational and cultural understanding of the United States through close interaction with the program’s instructor or “mentor”.  The dialogue surrounding the class provides a warm environment which promotes learning through a combination of classroom activities related to grammar and composition, fieldtrips and community activities.  Students successfully completing the program and earning the minimum TOEFL scores are well prepared for transition into freshman level courses.
